KOH is an alkali (common name potassium hydroxide) which absorbs carbon dioxide. So the change in volume of gas in the vessel in which the mouse is placed will be indicative of the oxygen consumption of the mouse. the co2 exhaled would have contributed to inaccurate measurement of volume change and hence that of o2 consumption
