Nokia N97 and 5800 – a Match Made in Heaven

Nokia are making their play for touchscreen domination with not one, but TWO separate mobile phones. Let’s take a look at the phenomenal duo of the Nokia N97 and 5800.

Many people are under the false assumption that the Nokia 5800 is the first touchscreen mobile phone Nokia have ever made. It isn’t. Actually, there’s been several touch-based phones to wear the Nokia name. Starting with the 7700, we’ve seen a few Nokia mobile phones that work by you pressing directly on the screen. They all had reasonably big (for their time) screens, but unfortunately, they shared something else: they were irredeemably hideous. Only one of these handsets, the 6708, displayed a modicum promise, but it was made solely for China, and so, we never got to play with them in the UK. So, we were relegated to handsets that were total, and complete bobbins. However, these bad memories have all been removed because of the launch of two new Nokia mobile phones, both of which come with touch-sensitive displays, and both of which are so much nicer…

Nokia 5800 – musical whizz

First on the list is a completely new member of Nokia’s Xpress family of music mobile phones, the stunning Nokia 5800. This phone is pretty obviously built for music and media, as it has a separate XpressMusic button that opens a list of links to music, videos, the web, and more. Oh, and the Nokia 5800 has a 3.2 inch touchscreen, to actually play with those different media files. Basically, the Nokia 5800 was designed as a little portable entertainment centre, and as music phones go, this is easily one of the sweetest.

The Nokia 5800 also has, built-in, a 3 megapixel camera, HSDPA internet access and sat-nav, making it a brilliant all-round mobile phone, on top of being a wonderful media gadget. Oh, and it’s got a lanyard to attach an imitation guitar pick. Pointless, but brilliant.

However, the Nokia 5800 is very definitely a mid-range phone; it’s not, nor will it ever be, an absolute top-ender. That position belongs to a separate mobile…

Nokia N97 – power and beauty

With the Nokia 5800 on course to bring touch-based mobile phones to the mid-range market, that leaves a huge, yawning gap at the very top-end, and yes, there IS a touchscreen mobile phone on its way to take its place as the top-end powerhouse: the frankly awesome Nokia N97. This takes the same Symbian S60 Touch operating system and packs it inside the shell of a proper, full-on smartphone. So it’s got a massive, 3.5 inch screen, a flip out QWERTY keyboard, and the camera’s been upgraded to 5 megapixels. The Nokia N97 is, in a very definite way, destined to be the new flagship Nseries mobile phone, and it really is as hyper-powered as we’d heard from rumours, with HSDPA, GPS, digital compass, and built-in Flash, so that you have an internet experience like no other mobile phones! Put simply the Nokia N97 is awesome. It easily outdoes other mobile phones and while the 5800 aims firmly for the mid-range, I reckon that the Nokia N97 will totally DESTROY the competition next year!

Nokia 5800 + Nokia N97 – an In-depth Look

Posted by admin | Posted in Symbian | Posted on 09-03-2010

The world of touchscreen mobile phones is starting to get exciting, as the most recognised brand in the business has brought out not one, but TWO mobile phones: the sleek Nokia 5800 and the terrifyingly awesome Nokia N97.

Nokia 5800 – the power of music

First up is a whole new member of Nokia’s Xpress family of music mobile phones, the mouth-watering Nokia 5800. This phone is quite obviously made for music and video; you can tell by the separate XpressMusic button that brings up a list of links to music, videos, the web, and more. Oh, and the Nokia 5800 has a 3.2 inch touchscreen, to let you muck about with those different media files. Basically, the Nokia 5800 was designed as a teeny handheld jukebox and movie player, and as music handsets go, this is easily one of the sexiest.

The Nokia 5800 has also got a 3 megapixel camera, HSDPA internet access and sat-nav, making it a wonderful all-round mobile phone, on top of being a brilliant media gadget. Oh, and it’s got a strap to attach a fake guitar plectrum. That rocks. However, the Nokia 5800 is very definitely a mid-range phone; it’s not, nor will it ever be, a full-fat top-end monster. That position falls to a separate device…

Nokia N97 – the power of power

With the Nokia 5800 all set to deliver touchscreen mobile phones to the mid-range market, that leaves a very big gap at the absolute top-end of the product range; well, there IS a touch-based mobile phone on its way to fill that gap: the frankly awesome Nokia N97. This uses the same Symbian S60 Touch interface and crams it within the shell of a proper, full-tilt smartphone. Which means it’s got a massive, 3.5 inch screen, a slide out QWERTY keyboard, and the camera’s been upgraded to 5 megapixels.

The Nokia N97 is, obviously, destined to be the new flagship Nseries mobile phone, and it’s genuinely as powerful as the rumours said, with HSDPA, sat-nav, digital compass, and integrated Flash, meaning you get an internet experience that tops any other mobile phones! Put it like this: the Nokia N97 is unbelievable. It easily outdoes other mobile phones and while the Nokia 5800 (or, to give it its development name, the Nokia Tube) angles to take over the mid-range, I’m predicting that the Nokia N97 will totally DESTROY the competition next year!

Sony Ericsson S500i Review

Posted by admin | Posted in Cell Phones & Plans | Posted on 09-03-2010

Sometimes it’s hard to imagine that there is something left to the mobile phone experience that some mobile phone or other hasn’t already tried. With everything from mobile phones that resemble real digital cameras (or maybe it should be the other way around), to full fledged multimedia mobile phones, what ground is there really left to cover? In this, the Sony Ericsson S500i answers the question by producing something that, although maybe not entirely ground breaking in terms of features, is certain to make everyone gaze in adoration.

Features of the Sony Ericsson S500i

Foremost among the features of the Sony Ericsson S500i are its features, pardon the pun. Beauty may lie in the eye of the beholder, but by combining natural environmental themes into a mobile phone design, the Sony Ericsson S500i comes out looking smooth and slim with a shiny black finish to it. Not just that but the colour combinations of green, copper or yellow, truly not only complement the finish, but give it a distinctive overall look.

Fortunately, the beauty of the Sony Ericsson S500i is not just skin deep. Within it, Sony Ericsson has introduced stunning visual themes, one of which even changes the entire visual look of the phone based on the time of day as well as season (and is aptly named ‘Everchanging’). Unlike other mobile phones, when the S500i’s themes change, everything changes from the background, menu colours, and even subtle animations such as fireflies flying around against the night background.

Essentially, that is the strength of the Sony Ericsson S500i, its beauty. Leave that aside however and there is still a pretty decent mobile phone, not entirely special in any regards, but as a mid-range phone that is to be expected. Most of the expected features are present with the 2.0 megapixel camera and media player. One slight downside is that instead of using microSD storage, the S500i allows for Memory Stick Micro of up to 1GB to extend its existing 12 MB storage.

Of course, the screen is top notch, and crystal clear, allowing the thematic beauty of the Sony Ericsson S500i to shine through. Bluetooth and USB connectivity as well as WAP and EDGE are also available, completing the phone in many regards.

Touching Beauty

Not high end, yet it is doubtful that many will care. Simply put the Sony Ericsson S500i numbers among the most beautiful of mobile phone deals that are available. From its sleek black exterior with the small patch of complementing colour of the keypad, to the changeable, self-shifting themes that fulfil their promise, there isn’t much that can come close.

Appeal, in this mobile phone, is certainly not something that will be a problem, as it can’t help but draw eyes and evoke smiles at its small but noticeable quirks. Certainly something different from the usual camera focused or music focused mobile phones.

To all appearances, this mobile phone is intended to target the non-techies that don’t really see the point of having a phone full of features, but would rather something with good looks and functions that they can manipulate. In that, the Sony Ericsson S500i is one of the best, if not the best of, mobile phone deals.

Why I Hate My Blackberry Even Though I Love It

Posted by admin | Posted in Blackberry | Posted on 09-03-2010

I hate my Blackberry. No, don’t get me wrong – I love Difficult to understand, eh? Well, readJit, but then I hate it on… Sometimes I hate my Blackberry so much that I just cannot stand the face of that machine. Who am I? I am your everyday, commonplace 9 to 5 working employee in the office. The person who is very conveniently found slinking to the coffee machine almost every one hour, the person who has recently started smoking because it is the only way you can get into the pantry every hour – no questions asked. That is right; I am the legendary, common and perfect work-shirker. Life was going on fine until the regular cell phone came into the picture. With the advent of the cell phone, I could no longer tell the wife to take the call from the office and tell them that I was out of the house. All of a sudden, like the Big Brother’s eye, people who wanted to contact me, and people whom I had no intention or inclination to contact, could contact me simply by pressing ten digits on a device that had come straight out of hell – if you ask the procrastinator at least. But life was still cool enough to live with the cell phone. I could say that my cell phone did not have the network, or that I find it difficult to text with the mobile keyboard and of course – what email? I am sure; it must be someone like that geeky colleague I had in my first office, who used to spend after work hours playing Counter Strike on LAN that must be responsible for this simply inane piece of communication – the Blackberry. And it must be my wife that gave him company to actually buy this dumb piece of luck to rein me in. From a free bird to a shackled beast – I had this transformation within minutes of receiving the Blackberry as my office communication device. Okay, at first it was a love affair. Who doesn’t love a gizmo? At times I even thought the wife would be getting envious of my new “girlfriend”, but she kept on her mystic smiles. I should have known then what I was putting myself into. I was putting myself into an unpardonable Blackberry black hole! Imagine my utter frustration when I found that I could actually type with as much ease as a keyboard with the QWERTY keyboard on the Blackberry – surely the devil had come back to take his due back from the time when I was a project manager. And oh, did I tell you about the suicidal movement when I found out about the one touch email? There went the ‘Oh, my Internet wasn’t working at home and I couldn’t access the email!’ excuse, and of course I forgot to tell you about the one touch attachment opening with the blackberry – that moment really made me feel useless and gave me nightmares about having to actually work. It is a strange conundrum I am in. I cannot throw away my Blackberry which I feel like doing very often (It has made me a slave! I am a slave of the machine!) but I cannot keep it either. Are all Blackberry owners like that? I would really wish to know.

The Nokia N97 mobile phone combines a large 3.5? touch display with a full QWERTY keyboard, providing an ‘always open’ window to favorite social networking sites and Internet destinations. This mobile phone looks set to be the number one must have phone for 2009 and could pose a threat to the iPhone or the Google G1

Nokia’s flagship Nseries device introduces leading technology – including multiple sensors, memory, processing power and connection speeds – for people to create a personal Internet and share their “social location”. “From the desktop to the laptop and now to your pocket, the Nokia N97 is the most powerful, multi-sensory mobile computer in existence,” said Jonas Geust, Vice President, heading Nokia Nseries. “Together with the Ovi services announced today, the Nokia N97 mobile computer adjusts to the world around us, helping stay connected to the people and things that matter most. Nokia N97 Sensing your ‘So-Lo’

The Nokia N97 introduces the concept of ’social location’. With integrated A-GPS sensors and an electronic compass, the Nokia N97 mobile computer intuitively understands where it is. The Nokia N97 mobile phone makes it easy to update social networks automatically with real-time information, giving approved friends the ability to update their ’status’ and share their ’social location’ as well as related pictures or videos.

Nokia N97 Mobile Phone With Widescreen – Internet and entertainment

The home screen of the Nokia N97 mobile computer features the people, content and media that matter the most. Friends, social networks and news are available by simply touching the home screen. The 16:9 widescreen display can be fully personalized with frequently updated widgets of favorite web services and social networking sites. The Nokia N97 mobile phone is also perfectly suited for browsing the web, streaming Flash videos or playing games. Both the physical QWERTY and virtual touch input ensure efficiency in blogging, chatting, posting, sending texts or emailing.

The Nokia N97 Mobile Phone supports up to 48 GB of storage, including 32 GB of on-board memory, expandable with a 16 GB microSD card for music, media and more. Nokia Vs. Sony Ericsson – Nseries and Walkman in a Music Phone Showdown!

Posted by admin | Posted in Cell Phones & Plans | Posted on 09-03-2010

0

Today, I’m going to take a look at the two highest-spec music-oriented mobile phones, from the two biggest manufacturers in the UK: Nokia and Sony Ericsson.

The Nokia N95 8Gb – smartphone heaven?

Easily one of the best seller of 2008, the Nokia N95 8Gb is quite simply one of the most powerful mobile phones in the market, at the minute. Powered by Symbian Series 60, just like their other top-end mobile phones, the Nokia N95 8Gb packs in a 5 megapixel camera, built-in GPS and super-fast internet access, and then builds on top of that by adding a huge 8Gb of memory for you to store your stuff on. As part of the Nseries range of mobile phones, as well, the Nokia N95 8Gb is very definitely a smartphone, a mobile phone you can just pile on extra features to, until the cows come home. From office applications to games, from instant messaging to a virtual pet dog (which my mate has on his Nseries mobile phone), the only limit to what you can install on the Nokia N95 8Gb is what the programmers have made! It truly is a super-powered, high-end mobile phone.

But it’s not without competition… let’s take a look at Sony Ericsson’s highest spec Walkman phone no the market, the W960i.

Sony Ericsson W960i – a more touching option

Sony Ericsson have their own ideas about what a top-end music-oriented mobile phone should be, and those have come to fruition in the Sony Ericsson W960i a touchscreen wonder phone that uses a different version of Symbian to the Nokia. in this case, it’s UIQ, and that gives the Sony Ericsson W960i a crucial advantage over the Nokia. It has a touchscreen. And that is just brilliant. Mobile phones with touchscreens are always, in my experience, far nicer, and much more fun, to use. Of course, you get the same rage of options to add extra software to the Sony Ericsson W960i as you do with the Nokia, you get super-fast internet, and you get the same 8Gb of memory. In this mobile phone, however, you get a 3 megapixel camera (not 5) and you don’t get GPS, but despite that, the Sony Ericsson W960i is one of the best music mobile phones going.

Nokia vs. Sony Ericsson – which is the champion?

It’s kind of hard to decide between the two mobile phones, in this case. both Nokia and Sony Ericsson have really upped their game, and are on top form. Ok, sure, the Nokia N95 8Gb wins in terms of having a 5 megapixel camera and GPS, but then the Sony Ericsson W960i wins in terms of having a touchscreen and better (MUCH better) music, with the Walkman player (and on a side note, the Nokia music player tends to do stupid things like playing songs back at the wrong speed, so everything sounds like Alvin And The Chipmunks). So, if we’re judging them as being general mobile phones, then the Nokia just edges it. If, however, we’re judging them as being out and out music mobile phones, then the Sony Ericsson takes it.
