HP monitor 1/3 of bottom disappears and sometime all the screen disappears, sometimes it all come back?

HP Pavilion dv6000 running xp. Sometimes the monitor will come back and be alright and the bottom will gradually fade. Bottom 1/3 lines go up and down. You never know what top 1/3 will do, there is no consistency in colors. Is the a hardware problem or could it be something somewhere in the program. Thank ya all!
