How does T-mobile know if you’re using a sidekick or blackberry plan?

I have a sidekick and I like the plan. However I’m interested in getting a Blackberry but don’t want the blackberry plan because it doesn’t have unlimited text messaging. I talked to a Rep a few years back and they said they just know if you’re using a blackberry through a blackberry plan or blackberry through a sidekick plan. How is that possible or were they just lying?
