How do I make my LG Lotus phone alert me when I get an email?

When I had the blackberry, it alerted me (with a ringtone) when I received an email. I’m trying to do the same thing with my LG Lotus – I assigned it a ringtone, but it doesn’t work when I get an email. Kinda tired of constantly checking my phone to see if I received any emails or not.
