How can I improve wireless reception on my cellphone?

I just spoke with ATT trying yet again to improve the sound quality on my cellphone. No help at all. In the two years I’ve been on contract, I have tried four different phones (Motorola, LG, and two Samsungs). All lousy. I know plenty of people who have great reception, some on ATT! Do you guys know what I can do, short of tossing this thing little nerve-eating device in the river?
