you dont have to disconnect any wires.
I’m doing the same thing with mine. Youre going to have to remove the buttons for the mute key and the lock/unlcok key at the top. Its not too hard, youre just going to need some super glue or double sided tape.

yes it keeps the dust out and yes there is a light under the ball, but u only see a faint ring of light around the ball
